The Standards We Work To

Electrical and cabling work in Australia is governed by a set of Australian and New Zealand standards. Here is what each one means for you as a customer.

Standard What it means for your job
AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules. The master rulebook for electrical installations in Australia. It tells us how to wire your home or business safely – everything from cable sizes and circuit protection to earthing and switchboard layout. Every job we do follows these rules.
AS/CA S009 Cabling Rules. The equivalent rulebook for telecommunications cabling – data points, phone lines, fibre, coax. It makes sure your data cabling is installed neatly, tested properly and will not interfere with anything else in the building.
AS/NZS 3080 Telecommunications cabling – planning and installation. Works alongside S009 and covers the practical side: where cables run, how they are supported, minimum bend radii and separation from power cables so you get reliable network performance.
AS/NZS 3760 Test-and-tag (in-service safety inspection). Sets out how portable electrical equipment is inspected and tested to make sure it stays safe over time. Relevant for workplaces and commercial sites where regular testing is required.

Safety Testing: What Happens on Every Job

Safety testing is not a checkbox exercise – it is a consistent set of checks to confirm your electrical work is safe, compliant and documented. Here is our baseline process.

Before we start

  • Job safety check on arrival – site hazards, access, isolation plan
  • Isolate and verify circuits are de-energised before any work begins

During the work

  • Install or repair using correct materials, ratings and termination methods
  • Earth continuity and earthing integrity checks
  • Polarity checks
  • Insulation resistance checks

  • Circuit protection suitability verification
  • Visual inspection of terminations and heat-risk points

Compliance Certificates (CCEW)

What is a CCEW?

A Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) is a Queensland Government document that confirms the electrical work has been tested, is electrically safe, and meets the Wiring Rules and applicable standards under the Electrical Safety Act 2002 and Electrical Safety Regulation 2013.

It is sometimes called a “Certificate of Testing” or “safety certificate.” The certificate applies to the installation or equipment affected by the work – not the whole property.

When is a CCEW required?

Queensland law requires a CCEW for most prescribed electrical work. Common examples include new power points, switchboard upgrades, rewiring, hot water connections, EV charger installations and ceiling fan installs where new circuits are added. Minor non-prescribed work (like a simple light-globe change) does not require one.

What does the certificate confirm?

  • The work has been tested and is electrically safe
  • The installation meets AS/NZS 3000 (Wiring Rules)
  • The work complies with Queensland electrical safety regulations
  • The responsible person (licensed electrician) has signed off

Queensland Smoke Alarm Rules

What type of smoke alarms are required?

  • Photoelectric and compliant with AS 3786:2014
  • Interconnected – when one activates, they all activate
  • Hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery
  • Less than 10 years old and in working order when tested

Where must they be installed?

  • In every bedroom
  • In hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home (or the most likely path of travel if there is no hallway)
  • On every storey, even if there are no bedrooms on that level

Selling or renting?

If you are selling, leasing or re-leasing a property, compliant interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are already required. For rental-specific requirements, refer to the Queensland Government’s Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) guidance.

Product warranties

Products we supply (fans, switches, smoke alarms, EV chargers, etc.) are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. We can help coordinate a manufacturer claim where practical.

Complaints Policy

If something is not right, we want to hear about it and fix it. Here is how our complaints process works.
  1. Tell us. Email connect@connectedelectricians.com.au or call 07 5422 4918. Include your name, job address, what happened and what outcome you are looking for.
  2. We acknowledge. We will confirm receipt within one business day and let you know who is handling it.
  3. We investigate. We review the job records, speak with the electrician involved if needed, and may arrange a site visit.
  4. We respond. We aim to provide a resolution or a clear explanation within five business days. If it takes longer, we will tell you why and give you an updated timeframe.
  5. Still not satisfied? If we cannot resolve the matter to your satisfaction, you can contact the Queensland Office of Fair Trading or the Electrical Safety Office.
