Different rules apply depending on whether you own, rent out, or run a business from the property.
Homeowners
Homes built or wired after 1992 must have RCDs on power circuits. Homes after 2000 must have RCDs on lighting too. Selling? RCDs on all final subcircuits are required before settlement.
Landlords & rentals
Every rental in QLD must have working safety switches on power and lighting circuits. We test at the start of every new tenancy and issue a compliance certificate you can keep on file.
Businesses (AS/NZS 3760)

How an RCD test actually works
Four steps
Every Burpengary RCD test we do follows the same four steps. Here is what happens on your switchboard.

Push-button test
Every RCD has a “T” button. We press it: a compliant RCD trips within 30 milliseconds.
Trip-current test
Calibrated tester injects a small controlled fault. Compliant RCDs trip between 15 and 30 milliamps.
Trip-time test
Must disconnect in under 300 ms. Old RCDs often creep past this: the most common quiet failure.
Certificate
Written certificate on the day. Landlords keep for insurance; businesses have it emailed to their compliance manager.

What Is the Difference and how doea it work
What Is an RCD, and How Is It Different From a Circuit Breaker
An RCD, or Residual Current Device, is the technical name for what most Queensland homeowners simply call a safety switch. It monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit, and if it detects current leaking somewhere it shouldn't — through a damaged appliance, faulty wiring, or someone touching a live component — it cuts the power in milliseconds. That speed is what stands between a mild shock and a fatal one.
An RCD sits side by side with your circuit breakers in the switchboard, and the two are easy to confuse — but they do different jobs:

Protects your wiring and equipment from overload and short circuits.
🛡️ RCD (Safety Switch)
Protects people, by detecting current leaking to earth and cutting power before it can cause a serious shock.
