Smoke Alarm Installation Bellmere
If you live in Bellmere, compliant smoke alarm installation means interconnected photoelectric alarms in each bedroom, the connecting hallways and every storey, installed by a licensed electrician, and your nearest option is a team that's based in your own suburb. One of the biggest frustrations we hear from local families is tradies who don't turn up when they say they will, or never call back. When the business is run from just around the corner, that's a much easier promise to keep.
Your local electricians
A Bellmere-based, family-owned team just around the corner
Connected Electricians and Cablers was started by Josh and Sophie Atkinson, and it's run from Bellmere. Josh, a licensed Master Electrician, won South East Queensland's Master Electrician of the Year title in 2021, while Sophie looks after the admin while raising four boys. We're not a franchise and there's no call centre. When you ring 07 5422 4918, you get Josh or someone from our own team, and no call waits past the end of the day for a reply.
Master Electrician of the Year, South East Queensland 2021
Being local isn't just a nice line on a website. It means we know the mix of homes around here: newer brick houses on standard blocks, older places closer to Caboolture, and acreage properties with sheds and second dwellings. Each one needs a slightly different approach to smoke alarms.
Know the rules
Queensland's 2027 smoke alarm deadline explained
Queensland's legislation has been rolling out for close to a decade:
- 1 January 2017
New homes and substantially renovated homes
- 1 January 2022
Homes that are sold or leased
- 1 January 2027
All other homes, including owner-occupied properties
So if you own and live in your Bellmere home and haven't touched the alarms in years, the 2027 date is the one that applies to you. The requirements are set by the Queensland Fire Department, and they're the same everywhere in the state.
The standard
The compliant smoke alarm checklist for Bellmere homes
To meet the standard, your home needs:
- photoelectric alarms built to AS 3786-2014, with no ionisation sensor
- no alarm older than 10 years
- an alarm in every bedroom
- a hallway alarm outside the bedrooms (or, with no hallway, one placed between the sleeping and living zones)
- at least one alarm on every storey, including in the exit path on levels without bedrooms
- every alarm interconnected, so one triggers them all
- every alarm hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery, with any existing hardwired alarms replaced by hardwired ones
Read that list again and notice what's missing: there's nothing about whether your alarm beeps when you test it. A working alarm can still fail on type, age, location or interconnection.
Beat the queue
Why upgrading now beats the end-of-year rush
Every electrician in South East Queensland knows what's coming in the last few months before 1 January 2027. Thousands of owner-occupiers who've been putting it off will all ring at once, and wait times will stretch. Booking now means you pick the day that suits you, rather than taking whatever's left.
It also means you're protected sooner. The law has a date on it, but a house fire doesn't.
There's a practical upside as well. When we're not rushing between a dozen deadline jobs a day, there's time to look properly at your ceiling space, talk you through the options and answer every question. You get a better job, not just a quicker one. And if your home turns out to be compliant already, we'll tell you so and save you the money.
Acreage and second dwellings
Smoke alarms for Bellmere acreage, sheds and second dwellings
Bellmere has a good share of acreage, and plenty of those properties have more than one building where people sleep. A granny flat, a studio or a habitable shed is a separate dwelling, and it needs its own compliant, interconnected alarms. If you've just finished building one, now's the time to get it checked alongside the main house.
Longer cable runs and older wiring are common on acreage too. We'll look at whether existing wiring can be reused, whether wireless interconnection makes more sense in parts of the property, and what's the most practical, cost-effective way to cover everything.
Our alarms
Interconnected photoelectric alarms, supplied and installed
Our alarm range is Clipsal, Red and Brooks. All three meet the Queensland standard, and we choose the right one for your home based on layout, ceiling height and the existing wiring. Some systems include a controller that lets you test the alarms or silence a nuisance alarm from the ground, which is handy for anyone who isn't keen on ladders.
- Clipsal
- Red
- Brooks
Why photoelectric? These alarms use a light sensor that reacts to visible smoke particles, which makes them quick to detect smouldering fires, the slow kind that build up smoke in a lounge or bedroom long before any flames appear. Ionisation alarms are slower with that type of fire, and Queensland no longer accepts them.
Why interconnected? Because a fire at one end of the house is no use to you if the only alarm that sounds is the one at that end. When every alarm goes off together, everyone hears it, whichever bedroom they're asleep in.
We only install alarms we supply. People sometimes ask about buying units from a hardware store and having us fit them, and we say no. It's not about the margin. Supplying the alarm ourselves means there's no doubt it's genuine and compliant, and that's what lets us put five years of workmanship guarantee behind the job.
From the moment you get in touch
What to expect on installation day
Call or send photos of your alarms with your bedroom count. You get a fixed written price, often within hours.
A licensed electrician arrives on time, removes the old alarms and fits and interconnects the new ones.
Each alarm is set off and checked, the mess is cleared away, and you're handed written proof of compliance.
A few practical notes: we'll need access to the roof space, and we'll turn the power off at the switchboard while we work in the ceiling, so plan around anything that needs to stay on. Most homes are done in a single visit.
For sellers, landlords and property managers
Compliance certificates for selling or leasing your home
On a sale, compliance gets declared on the Form 24 that goes in with the transfer, and buyers' solicitors do look at it. If you're leasing, the alarms needed to comply from 1 January 2022, and you must test and clean them within 30 days before each new tenancy or renewal.
We can provide written confirmation of compliance quickly, so a sale or new lease isn't held up. We also work with property managers who need a reliable electrician they can call for troubleshooting and repairs across their rent roll.
No surprises
Clear, fixed pricing with no hidden extras
A typical three-bedroom, single-level Bellmere home starts at $690 for a fully compliant install. What you actually pay hinges on alarm numbers and cabling, and it's fixed in writing before we begin. No hourly rate, no call-out fee added later, no "while we're here" upsell.
You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice. If you'd also like a broader look at your home's wiring, we offer electrical safety inspections from $220 that cover wiring, smoke alarms and safety switches.
Questions our neighbours ask
Bellmere smoke alarm questions answered
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Bellmere?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Bellmere are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
How quickly can you come out?
In most cases, the same or the next day. We're in Bellmere, so you're about as close as it gets.
Can I fit my own alarms?
You can legally fit sealed 10-year battery alarms yourself, as long as no electrical work is involved and the whole system still meets the location and interconnection rules. Hardwired 240V alarms are different. They must be installed by a licensed electrician, and any existing hardwired alarm has to be replaced with another hardwired one.
Will you leave a mess?
No. We clean up after ourselves and leave the house the way we found it. Our 5.0 rating from 105 Google reviews says a lot about how seriously we take that.
Do you install solar or home batteries?
No, we don't install solar systems or home batteries. We focus on electrical and data work, including smoke alarms, switchboards, EV chargers and hot water.
What if an alarm fails after you install it?
Should anything we fitted fail on our account inside five years, the repair is on us. That's on top of the manufacturer's warranty on the alarm itself.
