Smoke Alarm Installation Chermside
Smoke alarm installation in Chermside involves replacing old or non-compliant alarms with photoelectric smoke alarms that talk to each other, covering each bedroom, the hallways between and every storey, so the home meets Queensland law, and hardwired alarms must be fitted by a licensed electrician. It usually starts the same way: an alarm begins chirping in the middle of the night, someone drags a chair into the hallway, and the next morning there's a sticky note on the fridge that says "fix smoke alarm". Connected Electricians and Cablers can turn that note into a finished, tested, compliant system, usually in one visit.
Credentials you can verify
Award-winning electricians servicing the Brisbane northside
Chermside sits at the southern end of the area we service, which stretches from Caloundra down to the Brisbane northside. We're a Bellmere family business, and we make the trip south for homeowners, landlords and investors who want the job done properly by an electrician they can actually get on the phone.
Josh Atkinson, who owns the business, was singled out by Master Electricians Australia, the industry's peak body, as its 2021 South East Queensland Master Electrician of the Year. Our licence, $20M public liability policy and five-year workmanship guarantee (in addition to the manufacturer's warranty) all come standard with every installation.

Why it matters
Why working smoke alarms matter in Chermside homes
Most house fires don't start with a dramatic flash. They start quietly, with a smouldering couch, a faulty appliance or a phone charger buried under a pillow, and they produce smoke long before flames. That smoke is the danger when everyone's asleep. A working, well-placed smoke alarm is what gives your family the minutes it needs to get out.
The catch is the word "working". An alarm can chirp, flash and beep on test and still be the wrong type, too old, or sitting in a spot where smoke won't reach it in time.
Know the rules
Queensland smoke alarm laws and the 2027 deadline
The Queensland Government's smoke alarm legislation is enforced through the Queensland Fire Department, and it's been introduced in stages.
New and renovated homes have needed compliant alarms since 2017.
Any home sold or leased has needed them since 1 January 2022.
And from 1 January 2027, the law covers all remaining homes, including owner-occupied houses and units across Chermside.
The requirements are the same whether you're in a house, a townhouse or a unit. Each alarm has to be a photoelectric unit built to AS 3786-2014 with no ionisation sensor, it can't be older than a decade, it has to sound when tested, and it has to link up with every other alarm in the dwelling. Each alarm must be hardwired or run on a non-removable 10-year battery.
A word of caution from the government itself: unscrupulous traders may try to sell you non-compliant alarms, or tell you the law requires more alarms than it really does. Before hiring anyone, check their electrical licence. Ours is #90211, and we'll only ever quote for what your home actually needs.
Where alarms go
Where smoke alarms must be placed in your Chermside property
On each storey, you need an alarm in every bedroom and in the hallway that links the bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling. Homes without a hallway need the alarm positioned between the bedrooms and everywhere else. Even a level with no bedrooms requires one alarm on the route people would use to get out.
In a two-bedroom unit, that might mean three alarms.
In a three-bedroom, single-level house, it's usually four.
A bigger two-storey home will need more.
We map it out room by room before we quote, so the number is right the first time.
Older homes and units
Interconnecting alarms in older homes and units with limited ceiling access
Chermside has a real mix of housing: post-war houses, newer townhouses and plenty of apartments. Older homes and units can be tricky, because there's often limited ceiling space, or no roof cavity at all above some rooms. That's where people get stuck, assuming they'll need cables run all over the place.
Queensland law allows interconnection to be wired or wireless. In units and homes where running cable isn't practical, alarms can talk to each other by radio signal, and wired and wireless alarms can be mixed in one system. We'll assess your ceilings, explain the options, and recommend the neatest compliant setup.
Older ceilings sometimes contain asbestos, particularly in homes built or renovated before 1990. We check before drilling, and if asbestos is present, we follow safe work procedures or choose an alternative position or method.
Out with the old
Removing and replacing old or expired smoke alarms
Every smoke alarm has a manufacture date on it, and every one needs replacing after 10 years, because the sensor becomes less reliable with age. If your alarm has no date, assume it's past its best. When we replace alarms, we remove the old units, fit the new ones, and make sure every new alarm is interconnected so you're not left with a mix of old and new technology.
If any of your existing alarms are hardwired, their replacements must also be hardwired. That's a legal requirement, not a sales pitch.
For landlords and investors
Smoke alarm compliance for Chermside landlords and investors
If you own a rental in Chermside, your property has needed to comply since 2022. There's also an ongoing duty: before any tenancy kicks off or rolls over, you have 30 days to test and clean every alarm and replace batteries that are flat or fading. Tenants then carry the job of an annual test and clean.
Every job ends with a written compliance confirmation, which keeps your records straight and gives your property manager what they need. Planning to sell instead? Compliance is something you'll formally state on the Form 24 when the title transfers, so it pays to sort it before the property goes on the market.

Between visits
Testing and maintenance tips between electrician visits
A few minutes every so often keeps your alarms ready:
- 1
Press the test button on one alarm about once a month. With interconnected alarms, they should all sound.
- 2
Gently vacuum around each alarm every six months to clear dust and insects.
- 3
Check the manufacture dates once a year and note when each is due for replacement.
- 4
If an alarm chirps regularly, call us. In a sealed or hardwired unit, it can mean the alarm itself needs replacing.
Questions Chermside homeowners ask
Chermside smoke alarm installation FAQs
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Chermside?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Chermside are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Can you install smoke alarms in a unit?
Yes. The same requirements apply to units and townhouses. Where ceiling access is limited, wireless interconnection is an option we'll talk through with you.
Which brands do you use?
Clipsal, Red and Brooks. We only install alarms we supply, so we can guarantee they're compliant.
How soon can you come?
Usually within a day or so of booking.
My alarms are only five years old. Do I still need new ones?
Not necessarily. If they're photoelectric, interconnected, in the right places and working, they may already comply. If they're ionisation or not interconnected, they'll need replacing or upgrading. Send us a photo of the label and we'll tell you honestly.
Will you need to get into every room?
Yes, we'll need access to each bedroom, the hallways and the roof space where there is one. If you've got tenants in the property, we're happy to coordinate a time with your property manager so the visit is quick and easy for everyone.

A safety inspection, which looks at wiring, smoke alarms and safety switches together, is priced from $220. You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.
