Smoke Alarm Installation Deception Bay
For Deception Bay homes, smoke alarm installation means a licensed electrician supplies and installs photoelectric alarms, links them together, makes sure every bedroom, bedroom hallway and level is covered, then tests the system so it meets Queensland's smoke alarm legislation. Often the reminder comes from a real estate agent. You mention you're thinking of selling, and the first question back is "are your smoke alarms compliant?" Suddenly a job you'd been meaning to get to has a deadline attached. Connected Electricians and Cablers, a family-owned team based in Bellmere, can quote from a few photos and usually have it done the same or the next day.
This page is set out the way people actually ask about smoke alarms, one question at a time. If yours isn't here, call us and ask.
Josh Atkinson, the owner, was honoured as 2021 Master Electrician of the Year for South East Queensland. Our credentials: Electrical Contractor Licence #90211, $20M of public liability cover and a 5.0 Google rating across 105 reviews. We're a local, family business, not a franchise, so your call goes to a real person who replies the same day.
Know the rules
What Queensland's smoke alarm requirements mean for your home
The short version: by 1 January 2027, every home in Queensland must have a compliant smoke alarm system. That includes owner-occupied homes, which are the last group to be brought in. Homes sold or leased have already needed to comply since 1 January 2022, and new or substantially renovated homes since 2017.
"Compliant" is a specific checklist, set by the Queensland Fire Department. Every alarm must use photoelectric sensing under AS 3786-2014, skip any ionisation sensor, have a manufacture date within the last 10 years, respond when tested, connect to all the other alarms, and be powered by 240V mains or a non-removable 10-year battery.
Where alarms go
How many smoke alarms do you need?
It depends on your layout. On every storey, alarms must be installed:
- in each bedroom
- in hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the home
- between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey, if there's no hallway
- in the most likely path of travel to the exit, on a storey with no bedrooms
A lowset three-bedroom home in Deception Bay will typically need four alarms.
A four-bedroom home with a second living area or a granny flat will need more.
We count it out room by room and explain each one, so you know you're not being sold extras.
Placement on the ceiling matters too. Alarms work best a fair distance from the ceiling's edges, from light fittings and from anything that moves air, such as air conditioning vents and fan blades, where dead air or draughts can stop smoke reaching the sensor. Keeping them a sensible distance from the kitchen and bathroom also cuts down on false alarms from cooking and shower steam. Good placement is part of what makes a system compliant in practice, not just on paper.
Alarm type
What type of smoke alarms are required?
Photoelectric, interconnected, and either hardwired or sealed 10-year battery.
Photoelectric alarms detect smoke using light, which makes them good at catching smouldering fires early. Interconnection means they all sound at once. And if you've already got a hardwired alarm, it must be replaced with a hardwired one. You can't swap a 240V alarm for a battery model to save money.
On the day
How long does a smoke alarm installation take?
Most homes are finished in a single visit.
The exact time depends on how many alarms you need, how easy the roof space is to get into, and whether we can reuse existing wiring. When we book you in, we'll give you a realistic time window so you can plan your day around it.
Working isn't compliant
I already have working smoke alarms. Am I covered?
This is the question where most people get caught out. Working isn't the same as compliant.
An alarm can chirp, pass the test button and look brand new, and still fail because it's ionisation, because it's more than 10 years old, because it isn't interconnected, or because there isn't one in each bedroom. Turn one over and check the label for the type and the manufacture date. Then press the test button and listen. If the others don't sound too, they're not interconnected.
If you're not sure, send us a photo of the label. We'll tell you straight whether it complies, even if the answer is "you're fine".
For sellers and landlords
Selling in Deception Bay? Your alarms must comply before sale
Any home sold in Queensland has needed a compliant system since 2022, and the seller declares compliance on the Form 24 transfer document at settlement. Real estate agents and buyers' solicitors know this, which is why it comes up early. Sorting it before you list keeps the sale on track and takes one more worry off your plate.
A simple tip: book your smoke alarm job before the photographer comes through for the listing. That way the new alarms are already in the marketing photos, your agent can tell buyers the home is compliant from day one, and there's nothing left to chase in the busy weeks between signing the contract and settlement.
Leasing?
If you're leasing, the same rules have applied since 2022. For rentals, the landlord tests and cleans each alarm during the 30 days ahead of a tenancy starting or renewing, and the tenant handles a test and clean at least every year.
Paperwork sorted
Written confirmation of compliance on the day
When we finish, we test each alarm on the spot and issue you a written statement that your system complies. That's your paperwork for an agent, a property manager or your own records. On the day, you can expect:
- a licensed electrician who turns up when we said we would
- your old alarms removed
- new alarms installed and interconnected to the Queensland standard
- every alarm tested on site
- a clean house when we leave

We install and link your alarms, generally on the day you book or the next.
Every alarm is tested, and the paperwork confirming compliance is yours.
Our alarms
Why we only install alarms we supply
Our range is Clipsal, Red and Brooks, each one meeting the Queensland standard. We don't fit alarms bought by customers, and we'll be honest about why. Because the alarm comes from us, its authenticity and compliance aren't in question, and our five-year workmanship guarantee can cover the full installation. With a customer-supplied alarm, that certainty disappears, and for a safety device, certainty matters.

No surprises
Upfront fixed pricing and a 5 year workmanship guarantee
Your price is fixed in writing before any work starts, and it's what you pay. Three bedrooms, one level: that's a $690 starting price. There's no call-out fee added afterwards and no hourly rate ticking over.
Each install includes a five-year promise on our workmanship, with the alarm maker's warranty applying as well. Anything we installed that fails within that time gets fixed free.
Questions Deception Bay homeowners ask
Other questions Deception Bay locals ask
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Deception Bay?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Deception Bay are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Do you handle other electrical work?
Yes. As well as smoke alarms, we look after switchboard upgrades, safety switches, lighting, electric hot water repairs and replacements, EV chargers and data cabling. We don't install solar or commission security systems.
What if I have an electrical emergency?
Our 24/7 emergency line is monitored day and night. For a genuine emergency, we'll answer or call you straight back.
How do I know you're licensed?
You can look up any electrical licence on the Electrical Safety Office website before hiring someone. Ours is Electrical Contractor Licence #90211. The Queensland Government has also warned that some traders may try to sell non-compliant alarms or claim you need more than you do, so it's always worth checking.
Will my old alarms still work while I wait for the install?
Leave them in place and keep testing them until we arrive. An old alarm isn't compliant, but it's still better than no alarm at all. If one is chirping constantly, let us know and we'll prioritise your booking where we can.
Can I book online?
