Smoke Alarm Installation Glasshouse Mtns

Smoke alarm installation in Glass House Mountains (often shortened to Glasshouse Mtns) means fitting photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in each bedroom, the hallways that lead to them and every storey, with hardwired alarms installed by a licensed electrician, so your home meets Queensland's smoke alarm laws. Out here, homes are spread further apart and help can take a little longer to arrive, which makes early warning even more valuable. And if you're one of the many people still confused about what the 2027 legislation actually requires, you're in good company. Connected Electricians and Cablers, a Bellmere family operation, will explain it plainly and give you a fixed price to fix it.

Know the rules

Every alarm must be photoelectric: what that means for you

Queensland's legislation doesn't just ask for smoke alarms. It asks for a specific kind. Every alarm in your home must be photoelectric, comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014 and contain no ionisation sensor. On top of that, it needs to be under ten years old, functional on test and connected to every other alarm, and its power has to come from mains wiring or a sealed 10-year battery that can't be taken out.

Why photoelectric? Inside the alarm, a small light source and sensor sit in a chamber. When smoke particles drift in, they scatter the light and trigger the alarm. That makes photoelectric alarms quick to pick up smouldering fires, the slow kind that can fill a home with smoke long before flames appear. The older ionisation type is slower with those fires, which is why Queensland has moved away from it.

The staging went like this: new and renovated homes in 2017, then sales and rentals on 1 January 2022, and finally owner-occupied and all remaining homes on 1 January 2027.

Hardwired homes

Replacing existing 240V hardwired alarms

If your home already has a hardwired alarm, there's one rule you can't work around. It must be replaced with a hardwired photoelectric alarm, not a battery unit. Here's how that plays out depending on what's in your ceiling now:

Your current setupWhat the law requires
240V hardwired ionisation alarmReplace with a 240V hardwired photoelectric alarm
240V hardwired photoelectric alarm over 10 years oldReplace with a new 240V hardwired photoelectric alarm
Battery alarm with a replaceable batteryReplace with a hardwired alarm or a sealed 10-year battery alarm
No alarm in a bedroomAdd a compliant alarm, interconnected with the rest

Hardwired work must be done by a licensed electrician. It involves working in the roof space with live electrical circuits, so it's not a job for the weekend.

Extensions and additions

Combining wired and wireless alarms for full compliance

Plenty of Glass House Mountains homes have additions, extensions and rooms where running cable from one alarm to the next isn't easy. Queensland allows interconnection to be wired, wireless or a combination. So a home might keep hardwired alarms in the original part of the house, using existing wiring, and use wirelessly interconnected alarms in an extension where cabling would mean opening up walls.

The important thing is that every alarm talks to every other alarm. If one senses smoke, they all sound. We'll design the combination that suits your home and explain why we've recommended it.

Acreage and rural blocks

Smoke alarms for rural properties, sheds and second dwellings

Many properties in the area have more than one building where someone sleeps: a granny flat, a cabin for visitors or a habitable shed. Any separate dwelling has to be fitted with its own compliant, linked alarms. If you've just finished one, or you're planning to rent it out, now's a good time to bring it up to standard alongside the main house.

Storms are part of life under the mountains, and power drops out from time to time. Hardwired alarms have battery backup, so they keep working when the mains supply doesn't.

For owners, landlords and sellers

Installation, testing and compliance for homes and rentals

Rental properties have needed to comply since 2022. For a landlord, every new or renewed tenancy brings a 30-day window to test and clean each alarm and replace flat batteries. Tenants look after an annual test and clean. When selling, you'll confirm the alarms' compliance on the Form 24 at settlement.

Whether it's your own home or an investment, each alarm we fit is tested before we leave, and you get the compliance confirmation in writing.

From the moment you get in touch

Our three-step process

01
Photos and a price.

Snap your existing alarms and tell us the bedroom count. A written price, fixed and final, typically follows within hours.

02
Install day.

A licensed electrician fits every alarm and interconnects the system, wired, wireless or both.

03
Test and sign-off.

Each alarm is checked where it's mounted, and compliance is confirmed in writing.

Our alarms

Choosing the right alarm brand for your home

Clipsal, Red and Brooks are the brands we supply and fit, and each meets the Queensland standard. The right one for your home depends on a few practical things:

We only install alarms we supply. That way, nothing unknown goes into your ceiling, compliance is guaranteed, and our five-year workmanship guarantee covers the job alongside the manufacturer's warranty. Alarms bought online or from a hardware store don't come with that certainty.

  • Clipsal
  • Red
  • Brooks
  • how many alarms you need and where they go
  • whether existing hardwired wiring can be reused
  • whether some rooms need wireless interconnection
  • ceiling height and construction
  • whether a controller for testing or silencing alarms from the ground would be useful

No surprises

Fixed pricing before we start, often from photos

We know a trip out to the hinterland can make people nervous about callout fees. We don't charge them on top of your quote. The price is put in writing before we begin, set by your alarm count and wiring needs, and it's final. Installs begin at $690 for a single-storey, three-bedroom home.

You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.

The Connected promise

A 5 year workmanship guarantee on every install

Should our workmanship be the cause of a failure inside five years, we'll come back and repair it without charge. That's in addition to the manufacturer's warranty on the alarm itself. It's the kind of guarantee you can only offer when you stand behind both the product and the people installing it.

Questions hinterland homeowners ask

Glass House Mountains smoke alarm FAQs

How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Glass House Mountains?

Compliant smoke alarm installs in Glass House Mountains are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โ€œwhile we're hereโ€ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.

Can I install smoke alarms myself?

Sealed 10-year battery alarms are fine to fit yourself when no electrical work is needed, but every alarm still needs to be in a required location and connected to the others. For hardwired ones, you'll need a licensed electrician.

How many alarms will I need?

Storey by storey: an alarm for each bedroom, another in the corridor outside them, and one on the exit path on any level with no bedrooms. A three-bedroom, single-level home usually needs four.

How soon can you get out here?

Usually on the day you book or the next. Glass House Mountains is a regular run for us, so you won't be waiting weeks for a booking.

Where should alarms sit on the ceiling?

Clear of the ceiling's edges, light fittings, air conditioning outlets and fan blades, and not right outside a kitchen or bathroom. Those spots either stop smoke reaching the sensor or cause nuisance alarms from steam and cooking. Getting the position right is part of what we do on every job.

Do I need to be home?

Someone will need to let us in and give us access to the roof space and every bedroom. Most homes are finished in a single visit, and we'll give you a time window when we book.

Do you install solar?

No. We don't install solar or home batteries, but we handle the rest of your home's electrical work, including smoke alarms, switchboards and EV chargers.
