Smoke Alarm Installation Morayfield
Smoke alarm installation in Morayfield replaces old alarms with interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms that meet AS 3786:2014, placed in each bedroom, the hallways connecting them and on every level, with hardwired units installed and tested by a licensed electrician. It often starts with a weekend trip to the hardware store, standing in front of a shelf of smoke alarms and wondering which one, how many, and whether you're even allowed to put them in yourself. Connected Electricians and Cablers takes that guesswork away. We're a family business in Bellmere, only minutes from Morayfield, and we'll tell you exactly what your home needs and what it'll cost before any work starts.

Josh and Sophie Atkinson started Connected Electricians and Cablers, and the business has been looking after Moreton Bay homes for 15-plus years. Josh picked up a regional title in 2021: Master Electrician of the Year, South East Queensland. Licensed under #90211 and insured for $20M in public liability, we've earned a 5.0 average from 105 Google reviewers.

Installation, inspection, testing and supply under one roof
Some people end up juggling a supplier for the alarms, an electrician for the wiring and someone else to tell them whether it all complies. We handle the lot. We provide the alarms, fit and link them, test each one where it's installed and put the compliance confirmation in writing.
If you're not ready to replace anything yet and just want to know where you stand, our electrical safety inspections start from $220. They cover your wiring, smoke alarms and safety switches, and they're a sensible step before you buy or sell.
Know the rules
Hardwired smoke alarm compliance to AS 3786:2014
AS 3786:2014 is the Australian Standard for smoke alarms, and Queensland law says every alarm in your home must comply with it, be photoelectric, and contain no ionisation sensor. Each one must also be younger than 10, sound on test, and trigger all the others so the whole house hears it.
Power is the other piece. Each alarm draws its power from the 240V supply or a built-in 10-year battery that can't be removed. Where hardwired alarms are already in place, their replacements must be hardwired as well, and only a licensed electrician can install them.
Queensland introduced these rules in stages. The 2017 stage covered new and renovated homes; the 2022 stage added any home sold or leased; and the 2027 stage sweeps up everything else, owner-occupied Morayfield houses included.
Older homes
Smoke alarm upgrades in older Morayfield homes
Morayfield has plenty of homes that have been around for a few decades. In those houses, we often find older hardwired alarms that are ionisation types, alarms well past their 10-year life, or a single hallway alarm with nothing in the bedrooms. All of those need upgrading.
The good news is that existing hardwired wiring can often be reused, which keeps the job tidy and the cost down. Where cabling between alarms isn't practical, Queensland law allows wireless interconnection, and wired and wireless alarms can work together in the same system.
Placement gets a fresh look during an upgrade too. In older homes, alarms were sometimes stuck wherever was easiest, which can mean right beside the kitchen, tucked into a ceiling corner or under a ceiling fan. Those spots cause false alarms or slow the alarm's response. When we replace them, we position each new alarm where it'll actually do its job, while still meeting the legal location rules for bedrooms, hallways and each storey.
How they work
Interconnected photoelectric alarms explained
A photoelectric alarm contains a light source and a sensor. When smoke enters the chamber, the particles scatter the light onto the sensor and the alarm sounds. It's especially quick at picking up smouldering fires, which can smoulder in furniture or bedding for some time before bursting into flame.
Interconnection takes that early warning and spreads it through the house. When any alarm senses smoke, every alarm sounds. So a fire that starts in the lounge room while everyone's asleep wakes the whole household, not just whoever's closest.
Honest advice
When your switchboard needs attention too
Smoke alarms aren't the only part of an older home that may need a look. While we're working on your alarms, we'll sometimes spot a switchboard that's tired or unsafe. We won't fix anything you haven't asked for, but we will tell you, because you'd want to know.
One Morayfield homeowner put it well in a Google review. Josh was there to install an oven, noticed their switchboard wasn't safe, sorted it on the spot and talked them through it. That's the kind of honesty we aim for on every job.
Signs your switchboard may need checking include:
- old ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers
- no safety switches, or only one protecting a few circuits
- breakers or safety switches that trip often
- scorch marks, a burning smell or buzzing from the board
If you notice any of these, mention it when you request your smoke alarm quote.
For sellers and landlords
Compliance for selling or renting in Morayfield
Homes sold or leased have needed compliant alarms since 2022. Anyone selling will declare smoke alarm compliance on the Form 24 that accompanies the transfer, which is why it's well worth sorting before you list.
Landlords have a standing obligation too: test and clean each alarm and replace weak or flat batteries within the 30 days before any tenancy starts or renews. During the lease, the tenant tests and cleans them annually at minimum. Property managers and landlords get their written compliance confirmation fast.
From the moment you get in touch
Our simple three-step process
Show us your current alarms in a few photos and mention how many bedrooms. The fixed price arrives in writing, frequently that same day.
Next, a licensed electrician fits and links every alarm, often the same or following day.
Finally, each alarm is tested and you receive written proof your home complies.
Our alarms
Why we supply every alarm we install
Clipsal, Red and Brooks are the alarms we supply and install, matched to your layout, ceiling height and existing wiring. We don't install alarms customers buy themselves.
- Clipsal
- Red
- Brooks
That's not about margin. Because we source the alarm, we're certain it's genuine and compliant, which is what allows our five-year workmanship guarantee to cover the whole installation, together with the manufacturer's warranty. If the alarm comes from somewhere else, we can't offer that same certainty, and with a device that protects your family, certainty matters.
No surprises
What does compliance cost for a three-bedroom home?
For a three-bedroom home on a single level, compliant smoke alarm installs start at $690. That's a fixed price, not a starting point for an hourly bill. Your actual quote reflects the alarms required and any extra cabling, and it's given to you in writing before we start.
There's no callout fee added on, no hourly rate and no "while we're here" extras. Should the roof space hide a genuine surprise, you'll hear about it and approve it before we continue. You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.
Questions Morayfield homeowners ask
Morayfield smoke alarm FAQs
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Morayfield?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Morayfield are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Can I install smoke alarms myself?
Only sealed 10-year battery alarms, and only if no electrical work is involved. Hardwired alarms are strictly for licensed electricians.
How many alarms will my home need?
A three-bedroom, single-level home usually needs four: one per bedroom and one in the hall. Larger and two-storey homes need more, and so does a home with a converted garage or a bedroom tucked off the living area. Your quote will list each location and the reason for it.
Will my tenants need to be home?
Someone needs to let us in, and we'll need access to each bedroom and the roof space. We're happy to arrange a time with your property manager or tenants directly.
My alarm says it's photoelectric but it's from 2013. Is that okay?
No. Every alarm must be less than 10 years old, so a 2013 alarm needs replacing even if it's the right type and still works.
Do you do EV chargers too?
Yes. We've installed EV chargers for homes in Morayfield and right across Moreton Bay.
