Smoke Alarm Installation Moreton Bay
Smoke alarm installation across Moreton Bay involves supplying and fitting photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in every bedroom, the hallways linking bedrooms to the rest of the home and on each storey, installed and tested by a licensed electrician so the home complies with Queensland law. If you're juggling work, school runs and weekend sport, the last thing you need is a smoke alarm job that drags across three appointments and ends with a bigger bill than you were quoted. Connected Electricians and Cablers is a Bellmere family electrical business, and we look after smoke alarm installations from Caloundra in the north to Chermside in the south, with one fixed price and, in most homes, one visit.
This page is the starting point for smoke alarm work anywhere in our service area. It covers what the law asks for, what it costs, how we work and why we do things the way we do.
Connected Electricians and Cablers is led by Josh Atkinson, a licensed Master Electrician and South East Queensland's Master Electrician of the Year for 2021. The business has more than 15 years in Moreton Bay behind it, along with licence #90211, $20 million in public liability cover and a 5.0 Google rating from 105 reviews.

Book your smoke alarm compliance check
Not sure whether your current alarms comply? Start here. Send us a photo of each alarm's label, tell us how many bedrooms and storeys your home has, and we'll tell you whether your system meets the standard, what's missing and what it would cost to fix. You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.
If you'd like a broader look at the electrical side of your home, our electrical safety inspections, from $220, take in wiring, smoke alarms and safety switches. We recommend one before you sell.
Know the rules
When do you need compliant smoke alarms in Queensland?
Queensland has phased in its smoke alarm legislation in three stages:
- From 1 January 2017
Newly built homes and major renovations
- From 1 January 2022
Any home being sold or rented out
- From 1 January 2027
Everything else, owner-occupied houses and units included
Owner-occupiers whose alarms haven't been looked at for a while are the group the 2027 date is aimed at. If you've sold or leased a property since 2022, it should already comply. And if your home was built under a building application lodged from 2017 onwards, it should have been compliant at handover, though it's still worth a quick check.
What we install
Supply and installation of interconnected photoelectric alarms
Every alarm we install meets the Queensland Fire Department's requirements. Each one uses photoelectric sensing to AS 3786-2014, carries no ionisation sensor, arrives brand new (so well within its 10-year life) and links to all the others in your home. Power comes from the 240V mains or a 10-year battery that can't be removed.
Our placement covers each bedroom, the hall outside the bedrooms (or the space between sleeping and living areas when there's no hall) and every storey, including the exit path of any storey without bedrooms. We also keep them clear of ceiling corners, light fittings, air conditioning vents, ceiling fans, kitchens and bathrooms, so they detect smoke reliably without constant false alarms.
Why photoelectric and interconnected? Photoelectric alarms respond quickly to the visible smoke given off by smouldering fires, which are common in homes at night. Interconnection means one alarm detecting smoke sets them all off, so everyone in the house hears it.
Choosing a power type
Hardwired versus 10-year battery smoke alarms
Both are allowed under Queensland law, and many homes use a combination. Hardwired alarms run on 240V with battery backup, and fitting them is a job for a licensed electrician only. If your home already has a hardwired alarm, its replacement must be hardwired too. Sealed 10-year battery alarms have a built-in battery that can't be removed, and they can be fitted by anyone if no electrical work is involved, although the whole system still has to put alarms everywhere the law requires and connect them.
Alarms can be interconnected by cable, wirelessly, or both. Both types need replacing after 10 years.
Paperwork sorted
On-site testing and written confirmation of compliance
We don't leave until every alarm has been tested on site.
We confirm each one sounds, that every alarm triggers all the others, and that every required location is covered. You then receive written confirmation that the system is compliant, which is useful for your own records and essential if you're a landlord or about to sell.
For landlords, property managers and sellers
Smoke alarm compliance for landlords and property managers
Rental properties have needed compliant smoke alarms since 1 January 2022. Landlords also have ongoing responsibilities. Ahead of every new tenancy or renewal, with no more than 30 days' lead time, each alarm has to be tested and cleaned and any flat or nearly flat battery replaced. Tenants are responsible for testing and cleaning the alarms at least once every 12 months.
We work with landlords and property managers across Moreton Bay, including commercial and strata clients, and we provide written confirmation of compliance after every installation. For sellers, compliance is declared on the Form 24 transfer document, so sort it before you list.
From the moment you get in touch
Our smoke alarm installation process
Call us, or send a picture of each alarm along with the number of bedrooms. Within the day, as a rule, you'll have a written price that's fixed.
On a day that suits, often the same or next, a licensed electrician installs and links the full system.
We test each alarm on site and supply written confirmation that your home complies.
Our alarms
Why we only install alarms we supply
Our alarms come from Clipsal, Red and Brooks. We don't fit alarms customers buy themselves, and here's the reasoning. Supplying the alarm lets us be certain it's genuine and compliant, so we can put a five-year workmanship guarantee over the entire installation, on top of the manufacturer's warranty. With a customer-supplied alarm, we can't make that promise, and for a device whose only job is to protect your family, we won't cut that corner.

How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Moreton Bay?
Two things drive the price: how many alarms the home needs, and whether extra wiring is required. Across the region, a compliant install for a three-bedroom, single-level home starts at $690. Larger homes, two-storey homes and properties with granny flats need more alarms and cost more.
Whatever your home, the price is fixed in writing before we start. No hourly rate, no callout fee added later and no upsells. Anything genuinely unexpected in the roof space gets explained and agreed with you before work continues. You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.
