Smoke Alarm Installation North Lakes
North Lakes homes need photoelectric smoke alarms, all interconnected, in each bedroom, the hallways leading to them and on each storey, and a licensed electrician can install and test the whole system in a single visit. The question we hear most from local families isn't about the law, though. It's "will the price change once you're up in the ceiling?" With us, it won't. Connected Electricians and Cablers commits to a written price before we touch anything, and that's the number on the invoice.
Credentials you can verify
Backed by a 5 year workmanship guarantee
Every installation carries a five-year guarantee on our workmanship, and the alarms themselves have their own manufacturer's warranty on top. If something we installed fails within that window, we come back and fix it, with no argument and no fresh invoice.
Master Electrician of the Year, South East Queensland 2021
We hold licence #90211 as an electrical contractor, carry $20M in public liability cover, and our owner Josh Atkinson took out the 2021 Master Electrician of the Year award for South East Queensland. We're based just up the road in Bellmere and service North Lakes, Mango Hill, Griffin, Kallangur, Murrumba Downs, Narangba and the rest of Moreton Bay.
Know the rules
What compliance means for North Lakes, Mango Hill and Griffin homes
Here's a twist most people in the newer estates don't see coming. Many North Lakes, Mango Hill and Griffin homes were built with hardwired smoke alarms, so owners assume they're sorted. But smoke alarms have a 10-year life, and a house built in the early 2010s may well have alarms that are now past it. The estate is newer than Redcliffe or Petrie. The alarms often aren't.
Queensland legislation, which applies to every owner-occupied home from 1 January 2027, says each alarm must be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014), free of any ionisation sensor, under 10 years old, working when tested, interconnected with all the others, and either hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery. Homes sold or leased since 2022, and new or renovated homes since 2017, have already needed to meet that standard.
Where alarms go
How many smoke alarms does your North Lakes home need?
The number comes from your floor plan, not from a sales target. On every storey, every bedroom gets an alarm, and so does the hallway joining those bedrooms to the living spaces. Open-plan with no hallway? Then it sits between the sleeping and living zones. A storey with no bedrooms still needs one alarm on the path people would take to get out.
A lot of two-storey homes around North Lakes have bedrooms upstairs and living areas downstairs. That usually means an alarm in each upstairs bedroom, one in the upstairs hallway, and at least one downstairs on the way to the front door. A home office or study that could be used as a bedroom is worth asking about too.
Newer estate homes
Upgrading existing hardwired alarms in newer estate homes
If your home already has hardwired alarms, the law says any replacement must also be hardwired. That's actually good news in most North Lakes homes. Modern switchboards and decent roof access mean we can often reuse the existing wiring and add interconnection without major disruption.
Some homes already have alarms that are hardwired but not interconnected with each other, or interconnected but ionisation. Either way, they need upgrading. Where cabling between two alarms isn't practical, wireless interconnection is allowed, and we can combine wired and wireless in the one system.
How they work
Why interconnected photoelectric alarms are now the standard
Photoelectric alarms detect visible smoke particles, so they respond quickly to smouldering fires, the slow, smoky ones that are common in homes at night. Interconnection means that when one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds. In a two-storey home with the kids upstairs and the adults downstairs, or the other way round, that's what makes sure everyone hears it.
Put those two things together and you get a system designed around how house fires actually behave, not just a box on the ceiling.
Ten minutes, a ladder and a torch
A quick self-check before you book your smoke alarm upgrade
You can do most of this in ten minutes with a step ladder and a torch:
- Count the alarms and note which rooms they're in.
- Twist one off its base and check the label for "photoelectric" and the manufacture date.
- Press the test button on one alarm and listen for whether the others sound too.
- Check the hallway and each bedroom for coverage.
- Take a photo of each alarm and its label.
Send us those photos, plus the number of bedrooms and storeys, and we can usually quote without a site visit.
Between visits
Testing and caring for your alarms after installation
Once your new system is in, a little upkeep keeps it reliable:
Press the test button on each alarm every month or so. Because they're interconnected, they should all sound. Wipe or gently vacuum around the vents a couple of times a year, since dust and insects can trigger false alarms. And when an alarm reaches 10 years old, replace it, even if it still seems fine.
For landlords and sellers
Smoke alarm compliance for North Lakes landlords and sellers
North Lakes has a lot of investment properties, and landlords have been on the hook since 2022. Queensland law gives you a 30-day window before each tenancy, new or renewed, to test and clean every alarm and replace flat batteries. After that, the tenants take over with a yearly test and clean.
Sellers declare smoke alarm compliance on the Form 24 when the property transfers, so if you're about to list, it's far easier to sort it now than in the week before settlement. We work with agents and property managers and can provide a compliance certificate quickly.
From the moment you get in touch
Get a fixed price from a photo, not a site visit
Time-poor? That's exactly why we quote from photos. Snap your alarms, tell us your suburb and how many bedrooms you've got, and Josh will come back with a fixed price, often the same day. Then we book you in for an install, usually same or next day, at a time that suits your week.
Send photos of your current alarms and tell us how many bedrooms and storeys you have.
We confirm your fixed price and a licensed electrician installs and interconnects every alarm.
Every alarm gets a live test before we go, plus a written note confirming your home now complies.

Questions North Lakes families ask
North Lakes smoke alarm FAQs
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in North Lakes?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in North Lakes are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Can I buy alarms myself and have you fit them?
We only install alarms we supply: Clipsal, Red and Brooks. That way we can guarantee they're compliant and stand behind the whole job.
Will the job make a mess?
Installing alarms involves a little drilling, but our team cleans up as we go and leaves the house the way we found it.
My home was built in 2018. Am I already compliant?
Possibly. Homes whose building application was lodged on or after 1 January 2017 had to meet the new standard when built. It's still worth checking the alarms are all working and interconnected. Send us a photo and we'll tell you honestly.
How quickly can you get to North Lakes?
Usually same or next day. We're based in Bellmere, so North Lakes is a short drive, and Josh will confirm a time when he sends your quote.
What do other customers say?
We're rated 5.0 from 105 Google reviews. One customer who had her alarms updated and certified mentioned that Josh sent photos of the finished job and didn't try to oversell, which is exactly how we like to work.
Do you do other electrical work while you're there?
Yes. Switchboards, lighting, EV chargers, hot water and data cabling are all things we handle, though we'll only quote what you ask for.
