Smoke Alarm Installation Petrie
Getting smoke alarms installed in Petrie means bringing your home up to Queensland's standard of interconnected photoelectric alarms in each bedroom, the hallways that serve them and on every level, with any hardwired alarms fitted by a licensed electrician. If you're wondering whether it's really worth it when your old alarms still beep when you test them, that's a fair question, and the honest answer is that beeping and being compliant are two different things. As a Bellmere family business, Connected Electricians and Cablers will show you exactly where your current setup stands before you spend a cent.

Licence #90211, $20M in public liability insurance, and a guarantee covering our workmanship for five years beyond the alarm manufacturer's own warranty: that's what stands behind every Petrie install. We're rated 5.0 from 105 Google reviews, and we'd like to keep it that way.
Older homes
What we commonly find in older Petrie homes
Petrie has a lot of established brick-and-tile homes, many built in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. They're solid houses, but their smoke alarms usually date from a very different set of rules. When we take a look, these are the problems that come up most often:
| What we find | Why it doesn't comply |
|---|---|
| Ionisation alarms | Queensland now only accepts photoelectric alarms with no ionisation sensor |
| Standalone battery alarms with a replaceable 9V battery | Alarms must be hardwired or use a non-removable 10-year battery, and be interconnected |
| One alarm in the hallway, none in the bedrooms | An alarm is required in every bedroom |
| Alarms with no date, or a date more than 10 years ago | Every alarm must be less than 10 years old |
| Hardwired alarms that don't talk to each other | All alarms must be interconnected so they sound together |
None of that means the previous owners did anything wrong. Those setups were often fine when they went in. The rules have simply moved on, and from 1 January 2027 they apply to every home, including owner-occupied ones.
Know the rules
Queensland's interconnected photoelectric smoke alarm requirements
The legislation, administered by the Queensland Fire Department, has been phasing in since 2017. New and renovated homes came first, then any home sold or leased from 1 January 2022, and finally all remaining homes from 1 January 2027.
In plain terms, every smoke alarm in your Petrie home needs to be a photoelectric type complying with AS 3786-2014, have no ionisation sensor, be younger than 10 years, pass a button test and share a connection with every other alarm in the house. Each one must be powered by 240V mains or a sealed 10-year battery. If a hardwired alarm is already in place, its replacement has to be hardwired too.
Why photoelectric? Its light-based sensor reacts quickly to the visible smoke from smouldering fires, which is often how house fires begin at night.
Why interconnected? So that a fire detected in one room sets off the alarms in every room, and the whole family hears it.
Where alarms go
How many smoke alarms your Petrie home needs, and where they go
The law works storey by storey. On each level, you need an alarm in each bedroom, plus one in the hall that leads from those bedrooms into the rest of the home. Where there's no hallway, it goes between the bedrooms and the rest of that storey. On a level with no bedrooms, one alarm still has to cover the most likely route outside.
For a three-bedroom, single-level home, that's typically four alarms.
A four-bedroom home with a separate rumpus or second living area might need five or six.
We'll tell you the exact number and the reason for each one, so you never pay for an alarm the law doesn't require.
Out with the old
Replacing ionisation and standalone battery alarms
Swapping old alarms isn't just a case of unscrewing one and screwing another in. If your current alarms are hardwired, the new ones must be hardwired, and in many brick-and-tile homes we can reuse existing cabling to keep things simple. If you've got standalone battery alarms, we'll recommend whether hardwired or sealed 10-year battery alarms make more sense for each location, and how best to interconnect them, whether that's cabling, wireless, or a mix.
Older homes can also have switchboards that need a little attention before new circuits are added. If that's the case at your place, we'll tell you upfront and explain why, rather than surprise you on the day.
For landlords, property managers and sellers
Compliance for Petrie landlords, property managers and sellers
Rental homes have needed to comply since 2022. Landlords also owe a test and clean on every alarm in the 30 days before a tenancy begins or rolls over, and tenants owe the same at least yearly. We provide written confirmation of compliance quickly, which keeps property managers and owners on the right side of their obligations.
Sellers formally confirm the alarms' status on Form 24 as part of the transfer. Sorting it before you list is far less stressful than scrambling once a buyer's solicitor starts asking.
From the moment you get in touch
Our installation process, from quote to sign-off
Photograph your current alarms and let us know how many bedrooms there are. A fixed price is usually back with you the same day.
A licensed electrician removes the old units and installs and interconnects your new alarms.
Each new alarm is tested in place, and we confirm compliance on paper.
No surprises
Fixed pricing from photos, with no callout surprises
We quote a fixed price, in writing, before anything happens. Alarm count and wiring determine it, and it doesn't change. No hourly rate, no surprise callout fee, no add-ons you didn't ask for. Three-bedroom, single-level homes start from $690 for a compliant system.
Most of the time we can quote straight from a few photos, so you don't have to take time off work for a site visit.

Smoke alarm testing and maintenance in Petrie
Once your new system is in, keeping it reliable is easy.
- 1
Test the alarms regularly using the test button.
- 2
Twice a year, give the vents a gentle clean so dust and insects don't cause false alarms.
- 3
And keep an eye on the dates, because every alarm needs replacing after 10 years.
If an alarm keeps chirping, or one goes off for no obvious reason, give us a call. We'll work out whether it's a dust issue, a placement issue or an alarm that's reached the end of its life. A good rule of thumb is to write the installation date on a sticker inside the meter box or on the fridge calendar. That way, the next owner, tenant or property manager knows exactly when the system is due for renewal, without anyone climbing a ladder to find out.
Questions Petrie homeowners ask
Smoke alarm installation Petrie: your questions answered
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Petrie?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Petrie are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Can I buy my own alarms from the hardware store?
You can fit sealed 10-year battery alarms yourself if no electrical work is involved, but the alarms we fit are always our own Clipsal, Red or Brooks units. That's how we guarantee compliance and stand behind the work.
Do you service nearby suburbs?
Yes. Along with Petrie, we cover Kallangur, Lawnton, Strathpine, North Lakes and the rest of Moreton Bay, from Caloundra to Chermside.
How long does it take?
A single visit covers most homes, and we'll give you a realistic time window when we book you in.
My alarms beep when I test them. Why would I replace them?
Because the test button only proves the alarm has power and a working siren. It doesn't tell you whether the alarm is photoelectric, under 10 years old or interconnected with the others, and those are the things the law checks. It's a bit like a car that starts every morning but hasn't been serviced in fifteen years.
Will there be a mess afterwards?
There's some drilling involved, but we clean up as we go. Customers regularly mention how tidy the work is, and one even described it as the cleanest work she'd seen.
Is my granny flat included?
A separate dwelling needs its own compliant alarms. Tell us about it when you request a quote and we'll include it in your fixed price.
