Smoke Alarm Installation Redcliffe
Smoke alarm installation in Redcliffe is the job of replacing outdated alarms with interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in each bedroom, the hallways outside them and on every storey, so the home complies with Queensland legislation, and any hardwired alarm must be installed by a licensed electrician. If you've been burned before by tradies who didn't show up or quietly added extras to the bill, we understand the hesitation. Connected Electricians and Cablers is a family-owned business from Bellmere that gives you a fixed written price first, turns up when we say we will, and backs the work for five years.

Redcliffe homes and smoke alarm compliance: what to know
The Redcliffe Peninsula has one of the most varied housing mixes in Moreton Bay. Older timber Queenslanders sit beside 1970s brick homes, newer townhouses and plenty of units along the waterfront at Redcliffe, Scarborough, Margate, Woody Point and Clontarf. Smoke alarm compliance looks a little different in each of them, but the legal standard is identical.
Queensland's smoke alarm legislation has been phased in since 2017. New and renovated homes had to comply first, then homes sold or leased from 1 January 2022. From 1 January 2027, all remaining homes must comply, including owner-occupied houses and units. To pass, an alarm needs photoelectric sensing to AS 3786-2014, no ionisation sensor, an age under ten years, a working test function and a link to every other alarm in the place. As for power, it's either 240V mains or a sealed battery rated for 10 years.
The reason behind the photoelectric requirement is practical. Photoelectric alarms use light to sense smoke particles, so they're quick to react to smouldering fires, which can fill a home with smoke well before any flames appear. Older ionisation alarms are slower with that type of fire. Interconnection then makes sure the alarm in the lounge sets off the one outside the kids' room, so the whole household gets the warning at the same moment.
Safety first
Why hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician
Here's something people rarely think about: the risky part of a smoke alarm job usually isn't the alarm. It's the ceiling space above it. Working in a roof cavity can mean live cables, old foil insulation that may have become energised, and, in older homes, ceiling sheeting that could contain asbestos. WorkSafe Queensland's checklist for electricians installing smoke alarms includes isolating the power at the switchboard, confirming foil insulation isn't live and checking for asbestos before drilling.
That's part of why Queensland law says hardwired 240V smoke alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician. It's not a DIY job, and it's not a handyman job. Existing hardwired alarms can only be swapped for hardwired ones. Sealed 10-year battery alarms can legally be fitted by anyone, as long as no electrical work is involved, but the full system still has to cover every required room and have every alarm triggering the others.
You can verify any electrician's licence through the Electrical Safety Office before you book them. Ours is #90211.
Queenslanders and units
Interconnecting alarms in older Queenslanders and units
Older Queenslanders often have high ceilings, VJ boards and limited access in some rooms. Units can have concrete slabs between floors and no roof cavity at all. Running cable between alarms in those homes isn't always practical, and it doesn't have to be.
Queensland allows alarms to be interconnected by cable, wirelessly, or using a combination. In a Queenslander, we might reuse existing wiring where it's in good shape and use wireless interconnection where it isn't. In a unit, the right answer may be quite different. We'll look at what's there and recommend the neatest, most reliable compliant setup, then explain it in plain English.
Where alarms go
Where smoke alarms are required in your Redcliffe home
Every bedroom on every storey needs an alarm, as does the hallway those bedrooms open onto. Where there's no hallway, the alarm sits between the bedrooms and other parts of that level. A storey with no bedrooms still requires one alarm along the most probable escape route.
Ceiling position matters as well. Corners, light fittings, air conditioning vents and fan blades are all spots we avoid, since each can stop smoke reaching the sensor or trigger false alarms.
Existing alarms
Relocating, testing and replacing existing smoke alarms
Sometimes the problem isn't the alarm, it's where it was put. An alarm sitting beside a bathroom door or right next to the kitchen will keep going off, and an alarm tucked into a corner may be too slow. We can relocate alarms to compliant positions, test your existing system and replace any unit that's faulty or more than 10 years old.
Every new alarm is interconnected with the rest, so you end up with one reliable system rather than a collection of different alarms that don't talk to each other.
For landlords, property managers and sellers
Smoke alarm compliance for Redcliffe rental properties
There are a lot of rental homes and units on the peninsula, and landlords have had to comply since 2022. Installation is only the first part: in the 30 days ahead of any tenancy starting or renewing, landlords have to test and clean the alarms and replace flat or nearly flat batteries. Renters are on the hook for a yearly test and clean.
We work with property managers and owners, and each installation finishes with written confirmation of compliance, so your records are sorted when a new tenant moves in. Selling means stating your alarms' compliance on the Form 24 at transfer, so it's best done before you list.
From the moment we arrive
What happens on the day of your install
A licensed electrician arrives on time, confirms each location with you and isolates the power before working in the ceiling.
Old alarms come down, new ones go up, and every alarm is interconnected to the Queensland standard.
We trigger each alarm to check it, tidy up behind us, and hand you a written compliance confirmation.
No surprises
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Redcliffe?
The cost depends on your home, so we price every job individually and fix it in writing before we start. These are the things that shape the price:
| What affects the price | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of bedrooms and storeys | More locations means more alarms |
| Existing hardwired alarms | They must be replaced with hardwired units |
| Ceiling access and construction | Determines wired, wireless or a mix |
| Extra dwellings | A granny flat needs its own compliant alarms |
Compliance for a three-bedroom house on one level starts at $690. You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.
Questions Redcliffe homeowners ask
Redcliffe smoke alarm FAQs
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Redcliffe?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Redcliffe are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Can I supply my own alarms?
We only install alarms we supply, which are Clipsal, Red and Brooks units. Doing it that way is how we can guarantee compliance and put five years of workmanship cover behind the job, over and above the manufacturer's warranty.
Do you work in units?
Yes. The same requirements apply to units and townhouses, and we'll recommend the right interconnection method for your building.
My alarm keeps going off when I cook. Can you fix that?
Often, yes. It's usually a placement or alarm-type problem, and relocating or replacing the alarm generally solves it.
Is a newer townhouse likely to pass already?
There's a decent chance. The current standard has applied to new builds where the building application went in from 2017 onwards, so a recently built townhouse may only need a quick check. Older townhouses and units are a different story. Either way, a photo of each alarm's label tells us most of what we need, and if your place already passes, we'll say so rather than sell you something you don't need.
Will the price change once you're in the roof?
No. Your price is fixed in writing. The only exception is a genuine surprise in the ceiling, and even then nothing happens until you've agreed to it.
