Smoke Alarm Installation Strathpine
To install smoke alarms in Strathpine that comply with Queensland law, you need photoelectric alarms in every bedroom, in the hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the house and on each storey, linked together, and either wired into mains power by a licensed electrician or running on a sealed 10-year battery. A lot of Strathpine homeowners worry about being upsold, or being told they need more alarms than the law actually requires. That's a fair worry, and the Queensland Government has warned about exactly that. At Connected Electricians and Cablers, a Bellmere family business, we show you the count room by room and fix the price in writing before we start.

Most installs happen within a day of saying yes to the quote. We're licensed (#90211), insured to $20M for public liability and rated 5.0 by 105 Google reviewers, which backs that up. You're also covered by a five-year guarantee on our workmanship, in addition to the alarm manufacturer's warranty.
What we check
Smoke alarm compliance checks for Strathpine homes
Strathpine is a mix of established homes from the 1970s through to the 2000s, newer townhouses and plenty of rentals. When we check a home here, we look at four things for every alarm: what type it is, how old it is, where it's located and whether it's connected to the others.
Type: it must be photoelectric, complying with AS 3786-2014, with no ionisation sensor.
Age: it must be less than 10 years old. The manufacture date is printed on the alarm.
Location: there must be one in each bedroom, one in the hallway outside, and one on every storey.
Connection: every alarm must be interconnected, so they all sound together.
On top of that, each alarm must be hardwired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery. If you'd like a broader look at your home, an electrical safety inspection from $220 checks your wiring, smoke alarms and safety switches in one go.
Know the rules
Does our installation meet Queensland legislation?
Yes, every time.
Queensland's smoke alarm legislation, administered by the Queensland Fire Department, has been phased in since 2017. New and substantially renovated homes came first. Homes sold or leased followed from 1 January 2022. From 1 January 2027, it covers every remaining home, including owner-occupied houses.
We install only photoelectric, interconnected alarms that meet AS 3786-2014, in the locations the law requires. Where your home already has hardwired alarms, we replace them with hardwired units, as the law requires. Once the job's finished, we test each alarm in place and give you written confirmation of compliance.
It's also worth knowing why the law settled on this particular combination. Photoelectric alarms sense visible smoke with a light beam, so they're quick to respond to the smouldering fires that often start in homes at night, in bedding, furniture or an overloaded power board. Ionisation alarms are slower with that kind of fire. Interconnection closes the other gap: if a fire starts in the garage while you're asleep at the far end of the house, every alarm goes off, not just the one nearest the smoke.
Where alarms go
Where smoke alarms should be placed
The law sets out the rooms. On each storey, alarms go in every bedroom and in the hallways connecting bedrooms with the rest of the home. Where there isn't one, the rule shifts the alarm to a spot between the bedrooms and the remainder of that level. And a level that has no bedrooms must still have an alarm on the way to the exit.
Within each room, good placement makes the difference between an alarm that works and one that's ignored. Alarms shouldn't hug the ceiling's edge or sit next to a light fitting, an air conditioning vent or a ceiling fan, and they should stay clear of steamy bathrooms and cooking areas, which are the usual sources of false alarms.
Out with the old
Removing your old alarms as part of the upgrade
Yes, we take the old ones down. Your new system shouldn't share the ceiling with alarms that no longer comply, because a mix of old and new is confusing and can give a false sense of security. We remove each outdated alarm, install a compliant replacement where one is needed and interconnect the lot.
Asbestos in ceiling sheeting is a real possibility in homes built or renovated before 1990, so the ceiling gets checked before any drill comes out, with safe work procedures or a different position used where needed.
Between visits
How to look after your smoke alarms between services
Once your new alarms are in, they need very little:
- press the test button on one alarm every month or so, and check they all sound
- vacuum gently around each alarm twice a year to clear dust and insects
- never paint over an alarm or cover it
- note the installation date somewhere handy and plan to replace every alarm after 10 years
- if an alarm chirps regularly, call us rather than ignore it
For landlords and sellers
Rental and pre-sale smoke alarm compliance in Strathpine
If you own a rental, your property has needed to comply since 2022. Beyond installation, landlords must complete a test and clean of every smoke alarm in the 30 days before a lease begins or renews, replacing any flat batteries. Tenants are responsible for doing the same once a year or more.
If a sale is on the cards, the Form 24 transfer is where you'll declare compliance. Sorting your alarms before you list keeps everything simple when a buyer's solicitor starts asking questions. We can provide written confirmation of compliance quickly for owners, agents and property managers.
From the moment you get in touch
Fixed written quotes, often from photos
Take a few photos of the alarms you have now, add your suburb and bedroom count, and Josh will reply with a set price, usually before the day's out. You get a clear, written quote on-site before we lift a tool. No vague verbal numbers, no surprise extras on the invoice.
Photos of your alarms and your bedroom count are usually all we need for a fixed written quote.
A licensed electrician removes the old alarms and installs and interconnects the new ones.
Every alarm gets tested, and you keep the written compliance confirmation.
No surprises
How much will your smoke alarm installer charge?
It's the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on how the installer prices the job. Here's how the common approaches compare:
| Pricing approach | What to watch for |
|---|---|
| Hourly rate | The final bill depends on how long the job takes |
| Per-alarm price | Looks simple, but check how many alarms are being counted and whether extras are included |
| Fixed price for the whole job | You know the total before work starts |
We use a fixed price for the whole job, in writing, calculated from your alarm count and wiring requirements. Our fixed prices start at $690 for a compliant three-bedroom, single-level home. No hourly rate, no surprise callout fee and no upsells.
Questions Strathpine homeowners ask
Strathpine smoke alarm FAQs
How much does smoke alarm installation cost in Strathpine?
Compliant smoke alarm installs in Strathpine are quoted as a fixed price before we start, based on the number of alarms and any extra wiring your home needs. No callout surprises, no โwhile we're hereโ upsells. Every job is backed by our 5 year workmanship guarantee.
Which alarms do you install?
Clipsal, Red and Brooks, supplied by us rather than picked up by the customer. Sourcing them ourselves is what lets us guarantee compliance and stand behind the work.
Can I fit the alarms myself?
The sealed 10-year battery kind doesn't require an electrician, provided there's no electrical work, but the finished system must still place an alarm everywhere the law asks and connect them all. Hardwired units are licensed-electrician territory.
How long will the job take?
Most homes are done in one visit. We'll confirm a time window when we book you in, so you can plan around school pick-up or work.
Is there anything you don't do?
Solar panels, home batteries, security system commissioning and TV antennas sit outside our work. For smoke alarms, switchboards, lighting, EV chargers, hot water and data cabling, we're your team.
What if my alarm goes off in the middle of the night for no reason?
First, make sure there's no actual smoke or fire, and get everyone out and call 000 if there is. If it's a false alarm, use the hush button if your alarm has one and check for steam, dust or insects near the alarm. If it keeps happening, call us. It's often an old alarm, a poor position or a unit that needs replacing.
Do you service nearby suburbs?
Yes, including Petrie, Lawnton, Brendale, Bray Park and the rest of Moreton Bay.
